SYL Girls 1st/2nd/3rd - equipment

Hello families,

Just a quick note on the equipment 1st/2nd/3rd grade girls will need for our spring lacrosse season.

Goggles - Goggles must be lacrosse goggles and must be SEI safety certified. (Field hockey goggles look very similar but are missing an important grid in the goggle.) New this year, the goggles must also display the SEI certification on the top of the goggle. Coaches will be asked to attest to referees before games that their players are all wearing appropriate equipment.

Mouthguards - please make sure your girls have "youth" sized mouth guards. Mouth guards should be fitted so that the girls don't have pain in their gums (usually a sign the mouthguard is too big) and they should be able to speak relatively well. I recommend having the girls wear the mouthguards a few minutes a day, starting now, so that they aren't distracted by them during our practices. I also recommend buying several because they are lost fairly easily and as girls loose teeth/grow teeth new mouthguards are needed.

Sticks - Kids who participated in the Little Sailors program last year were given a Mini Warp stick. The girls can technically use these sticks up until 4th grade. SYL is also promoting the Stringking Jr intermediate stick this year for girls who can comfortably catch and throw - usually 3rd grade and up. (Will Robinson, equiment manager for SYL, sent out an email today with information on this.) Cleats - we do recommend that the girls wear cleats to practices and games

Gloves - lacrosse gloves are not required but for 3rd grade and up we are suggesting them. What we do not want to see are girls with knit/winter gloves, as they don't create a good grip on the stick.

Waterbottles - please always send your player to practices and games with a water bottle with their names on them.

Pinnies/Jerseys - For practices, girls should come wearing their pinnies over their jackets, etc. For games, grades 1/2 will wear pinnies over jackets/clothes and grades 3+ will wear their uniforms (over any other clothes needed to be comfortable.) Pinnies/Jerseys will be handed out at the first practice.

SYL recommends that our families use Good Sport in Cohasset for their equipment needs. They are a sponsor of our program and Austin is very easy to work with to get what you need.

Please be sure your girls are always dressed appropriately for the weather. I would prefer girls shed layers than shiver and the weather at the open fields tends to be cooler than a backyard.
